Leftists’ chances fade in first round of French election
In incomplete returns from 343 of 491 districts the centrist Gaullist coalition led with 46.9 percent, while the Socialists and Communists trailed at 45.6 percent. Analysts note leftists need about 53 percent to secure a majority, with runoff voting possible for each candidate who clears 12.5 percent. Alpine skiers missing after Swiss avalanche tragedy
Alpine skiers remained missing after a 300 meter avalanche struck the Alpine ski lift area at midafternoon. Police said fourteen victims were likely buried under nine feet of snow, with seven Swiss and the rest French among the missing. A massive rescue operation with 300 soldiers, air units, Red Cross workers, volunteers and tracking dogs continued through the night under floodlights as authorities prepared for a long hunt.
