CIA agent Downey freed after 1950s captivity in China

John T. Downey, the last American prisoner of the Korean War, is released by China and flown from Hong Kong to Clark Air Base in the Philippines en route to Elmendorf Alaska and then to Hartford or Westover to reunite with his ailing mother Mary Downey in New Britain Connecticut. Downey, 42, spent nearly 21 years in Chinese prisons after his 1952 capture on a CIA mission.
