John T. Downey, the last American prisoner of the Korean War, is released by China and flown from Hong Kong to Clark Air Base in the Philippines en route to Elmendorf Alaska and then to Hartford or Westover to reunite with his ailing mother Mary Downey in New Britain Connecticut. Downey, 42, spent nearly 21 years in Chinese prisons after his 1952 capture on a CIA mission.
North Vietnam announced it will release 108 American prisoners in Hanoi on Wednesday, as the United States again suspended further action. The move comes amid ongoing negotiations and broader U.S. policy pauses related to the war.
