Fishery Boom Transforms Cuba Under Castro Regime
In Havana Cuba has more than tripled its annual commercial fishing output in the nine years of Fidel Castro’s rule with Soviet Union and Japan assistance and Spanish shipyards. By mid 1967 fish production rose to 50 million pounds in five months, a 20 million pound gain over 1966, while city eateries now consume more seafood than the nation did pre 1959. A 25 million peso Havana Bay complex and Japanese training programs have expanded fleets to over 130 vessels and improved expertise while exports of canned tuna, marlin, lobsters and shrimp rise.
