A Greek tanker ran aground on a reef near Point James Eleuthera Island sending thick oil onto pink beaches. One crewman is missing after a rescue boat capsized. detergents are being flown in to combat the slick.
American forces and South Vietnamese troops clash with Communist units nine miles northwest of Tam Ky with hundreds killed. US Marines and infantry press assault as B 52 bombers hit Khe Sanh Hue area. Casualties include 16 Marines dead and 113 wounded. three reporters wounded and one photographer missing.
Washington recalls Ambassador William Heath to discuss deteriorating U S Swedish ties over Vietnam policy. Heath will return to Stockholm later, with U S officials citing displeasure and violent protests including Olof Palme’s speech and a death threat to Heath as factors.
After seven weeks of debate the Senate approved an amended civil rights bill 61 to 19 paving Monday for final passage. Open housing provisions would gradually ban discrimination in sale or rental, extending federal protections and penalties, with a main exemption for individuals selling or renting their own property.
Washington AP negotiations prompted by President Johnson press on as unions spurn a wage offer exceeding one dollar per hour. About 200 officials from 26 striking unions to meet next Monday to review talks while Johnson stays in the White House. The rejected bid came from Phelps Dodge, aiming to spur settlements with Kennecott, Anaconda, and American Smelting & Refining Co.
Arab saboteurs infiltrated the Beisan Valley and were chased back across the Jordan River by Israeli forces. The confrontation marked a second border flare up that week with Jordanian positions firing automatics and mortars to cover the retreat. Two Israeli soldiers were wounded.
The Florida Education Association urged a return to classrooms if 67 county boards accept teachers back into their old roles. A nine point school resolution added 10.5 million dollars for public schools as boards consider reinstatement and potential revocation of certificates for those who resign. Governor Kirk and State Supt Christian pressed boards to act and restore dignity to the system.
In Carbondale Illinois the entire police force and several city firemen went on strike over the firing of Police Chief Jack Kestel. State police sheriff deputies and SIU law officers patrolled the city as courts prepare a permanent injunction while some workers return to work to maintain operations.
Twenty one miners died in a salt mine cavern near Calumet as a four day search ended. Sixteen bodies were found in a tunnel 3,000 feet from the shaft and five more later. Officials cited carbon monoxide poisoning as the likely cause.
Mild temperatures persist across Ohio through the weekend. Tonight will dip into the 40s, cooler than last night’s mid-50s, with a high in the 60s tomorrow. Showers that briefly ended a dry spell last night have moved eastward and no further rainfall is expected.
