Sheriff denies 20 percent cut in drug education booklets
Hamilton Butler County Sheriff Harold Carpenter rejects reports of a 20 percent kickback from the sale of ads in the drug education booklet. Auditors investigate 14 sheriffs and eight chiefs for funds from the 96 page pamphlet “Drug Abuse Is an Escape to Nowhere” distributed to schools in 1969 70. Carpenter defends sponsorship as public information effort and says no contract exists though funds were deposited in a local bank rather than county treasurer, claiming the law does not apply.
