Edmistons Question If They Were Prize Chumps in Matusow Case
Journal reporter John J. Edmiston and his wife Martha say they may have been the prize chumps in Harvey Matusow’s communist tales. A sworn affidavit from the Edmistons and other testimony were presented to the Senate Internal Security subcommittee investigating Matusow’s stories. Their 11 page statement says they had reliable information Matusow rifled a dormitory at Antioch College and once believed his 1951 memoir reflected true experiences. They now doubt the veracity of his accounts and wonder if they were used as a communist plant plot. Edmiston recalls meeting Matusow in 1951 after a Wright Patterson Air Force Base chaplain connected them. Matusow claimed to oppose communism and lived with the Edmistons weekends through 1951-52. Journal editor Paul Day praised Edmiston as reliable, while Edmiston and his wife were noted as former FBI informants by Washington aides.
