Blown tires abort takeoff of Continental DC-10 in Honolulu
An aborted Honolulu to Seattle Continental DC-10 takeoff left two left main gear tires blown out but caused no injuries or fire. Passengers were bussed to the terminal after the plane stopped 8,000 feet down the runway at 3 34 p m HST. The Los Angeles incident earlier in the day involved a fatal two passenger fire.

Pilot Saves DC-10 As Two Die In Crashed Takeoff
Retiring Captain Gene Hersche guided the Continental DC-10 away from a fence after tire failures buckled landing gear and a fuel leak ignited. Two passengers, Carl and Anne Schneider, aged 76 and 72, died. Four were critically injured among 79 others. 11 firefighters were hurt. A Honolulu-bound Hawaii tour group was aboard. Separately in Honolulu another Continental DC-10 aborted takeoff after several tires blew. No injuries. passengers ferried back to the terminal.
