Nixon version challenged indirectly by indictment

The Watergate indictment challenges Nixon's account of his role in the wiretapping cover up. The grand jury found Haldeman lied under oath about Nixon opposing hush money. It notes the cover-up persisted after March 21, 1973, and Dean is not indicted though he pleads guilty to one conspiracy count and awaits sentencing.

Nixon urged to raise funds amid hush money probe

In a March report from AP, Nixon and aides debated funding hush money for Watergate figures while Hunt pressed for more money. Dean testified Nixon claimed raising funds would be no problem, though Haldeman said it would be wrong. Hunt sought up to 1 million to keep quiet and cited past actions including an Ellsberg psychiatrist break-in. Italian premier Rumor and his center left cabinet resigned, with a May 12 referendum on repealing the divorce law proposed to President Leone.

Nixon resignation seen as bad precedent by Richardson

Elliott Richardson said on a Cincinnati TV taping he opposes Nixon resigning, arguing it would set a bad constitutional precedent and impede the impeachment process. He spoke while campaigning for Willis Gradison Jr. in Ohio's 1st District race and cautioned voters against blaming Republicans for Watergate issues. He noted Nixon's foreign policy gains but warned Watergate could harm the two party system.
