Sugar prices rise in Ohio as housewives feel squeeze

An Associated Press survey across 12 Ohio cities shows sugar prices up to 42 percent higher possible, with five pounds of cane sugar averaging 94 cents and some stores selling near or above a dollar. Eggs and butter moved lower, while other staples such as pork chops and ground chuck showed modest changes.

Shootout Ends Kidnapping in Milwaukee

FBI agents and Milwaukee police killed Jacob P. Cohen after a dramatic two stage confrontation that left three officers wounded. A 14 year old hostage Daniel Brady escaped unharmed as Cohen dragged him inside a home and held two other children. The boy was later reported safe and in satisfactory condition.

Food prices seen rising up to four percent in February

Government data indicate retail food prices climbed as much as four percent from January to February, the sharpest monthly rise since August. The Feb 15 food-tobacco index shows a 24 percent year over year increase, while farm product costs rose 1.5 percent in the same period.

Harold Wilson’s Labor Party held a sizeable lead as 442 of 635 Commons seats reported. Projections from BBC and ITV placed Labor around 307 seats, short of a majority, while Conservatives hovered around 177 with Lib-Lab other totals small. White House aides indicted in Watergate case

A federal grand jury indicted H R Haldeman John Ehrlichman and six others including John Mitchell Charles Colson Robert Marchan Gordon Strachan and Kenneth Parkinson on charges to obstruct the Watergate inquiry. The panel also handed a sealed report and two black suitcases with evidence to Judge Sirica. Arraignments set for March 9.

Marathon Oil raises gasoline price at the pump

Marathon Oil Co boosted its pump price by 10 cents a gallon to 55.9 cents for regular and 65.4 cents for high test as foreign crude costs rise. A spokesman said overall per gallon margins in United States refining and marketing would stay unchanged.

Oil firms told to resume sale of turnpike truck fuel

The Ohio Turnpike Commission ordered four oil companies at turnpike plazas to resume selling truck fuel from 9 p.m. Saturday to midnight Sunday. Chairman James Shocknessy said the industry had not shown an actual shortage and aligned with President Nixon that the energy crisis no longer exists.

Ban on spray adhesives lifted by government

The seven month ban on 13 aerosol spray adhesive brands is lifted as no new evidence shows birth defects or genetic damage. The CPSC says 3 M Co. of St Paul and Borden Co. of Columbus may resume production and supply to industry and hobbyists who used over a million cans yearly.

Standard Oil of Ohio increases home heating oil by 2.6 cents to 33.4 cents per gallon while denying any gasoline price rise. The move follows federal approvals to pass through crude oil cost hikes and took effect today.
