Compromise Reached on Vietnam Peace Pact

The United States and North Vietnam agreed on a nine point declaration to back the Vietnam peace agreement. The document was to be approved at a plenary session of the international conference on Vietnam this afternoon. Reports indicate Secretary of State William Rogers would attend only if North Vietnam provided detailed guarantees on prisoner releases. U S officials said progress toward a settlement looked more positive as Hanoi delegates offered to free 142 prisoners but did not supply specifics. The four hour plenary delay centered on drafting committee work for the final declaration to be signed by 12 foreign ministers.

Interior ministers die in Baltic plane crash

Polish interior minister Wieslaw Ociepka, 51, and Czech Slovakia official Radko Kaska, 45, plus their aides and crew, died when their plane crashed near Szczecin. Ociepka had led the ministry since 1971 and was a CP central committee member. Kaska had led the Czech interior since 1970 after a decade on the CP central committee.

The dollar weakened across London Zurich Brussels and Milan as the West German Bundes bank bought over a billion dollars to defend the floor price. Frankfurt opened at 28350 marks while Brussels saw Belgian central bank purchases of at least 40 million in the first hour.
