Forgotten Frenchman Behind Liberty Statue’s Birth
Edouard de Laboulaye inspired the Statue of Liberty idea during a 1865 Paris retreat and funded Franco American efforts. His vision helped Bartholdi and others pursue a joint statue project. Laboulaye died in 1883 before America’s gift was completed, while ambassadors and presidents carried the legacy forward.
