Curves May Be Good for Cars
Bloomington scholars Dr. David Shinar and Dr. Thomas Rockwell led a $100000, two year study of about 1600 rural Ohio road curves. They painted curves to appear sharper and measured driver speeds before and after. They found perceived curvature can lower speed even when actual sharpness stays similar, suggesting visual illusion can reduce speeding and accidents.
