Carder is serving two consecutive life terms for the killing of Varnetta Brucker who ran a small grocery and dance hall near Lancaster. Defense says he had no attorney during interrogation and witnesses say he refused to see counsel or family. Carder was 16 at the time of conviction, upheld by state appeal courts.
