Tokyo Shimbun Editor Dies
Eisuke Fukuda aged 75, president of Tokyo Shimbun and a famed figure in Japanese journalism, died of pneumonia. The paper, with about 800,000 in circulation, was Tokyo’s largest evening paper and Fukuda once rebuilt the outlet after World War II. He started as a textile weaver and bought Miyako Shimbun in 1919, shaping a key prewar influence. He withdrew in 1942 during a nationalist merger, then returned after surrender to lead the paper again. Under Allied occupation it served as Tokyo’s only afternoon newspaper.
