Stricter enforcement eyed for hitchhiking hazard
Middletown Safety Council traffic division debated hitchhiking dangers after a recent accident left a hitchhiker with a hand injury. The group urged Police Chief Joseph Blackmore to pursue stricter state law enforcement and parental cooperation to curb the hazard. A jaywalking proposal was tabled for mid-block signs, as it would shift too much responsibility to the city and conflict with the state ordinance giving pedestrians right of way only at marked crossings. The council reviewed last month’s Safety Week traffic check, reporting 1,385 cars inspected with 83 deficiencies, 108, 83, and 81 cases proceeding to a second check.
