Carlyle House Reopens After 2.5 Million Restoration
Alexandria Virginia historic Carlyle House reopened under a 2.5 million restoration funded largely by local jurisdictions with federal matching funds. The mid Georgian mansion, built in 1752 by John Carlyle for his wife Sara Fairfax, served as a social political center before the Revolution. Archaeology uncovered 18th century privy shafts and artifacts including a Laverne pitcher and a carved African doll. The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority owns the site and displays family heirlooms and an architectural exhibit detailing 18th century construction.
