After fierce fighting and air strikes, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces retreated from their siege around Gia Dinh and Khe Sanh areas. U S Marines reported 11 killed and 30 wounded as surrender and skirmishes continued across the capital region. The government spokesman said Viet Cong resistance crumbled in Gia Dinh with 28 more surrenders and a total of 178 since Tuesday morning.
In New York the McCarthy forces surge as partial returns show McCarthy with 51 of 123 convention delegates. O'Dwyer defeats Nickerson for a surprise Senate win as Humphrey and Kennedy delegates lag. Nixon challengers win two of 11 delegate slots. Rockefeller takes 71. Emanuel Celler secures renomination.

Mrs Martin Luther King Jr widow recalls her husband calling it Americas last chance to solve problems non violently. The campaign leader Ralph David Abernathy pledges nonviolence amid heavy security.
About 200000 demonstrators converge in Washington to protest racial desegregation and equal opportunity. Police say Army units may be on alert near the Capitol though officials anticipate a peaceful march. Abernathy doubts added security is needed as crowds line three routes from the Washington Monument toward Independence Avenue and West Capitol Park.
A Carswell Air Force Base airman from Boston was fined 64 by a summary court martial for wearing a Eugene McCarthy button in uniform. The verdict awaits base command review after Gibbons reportedly attempted to bring a McCarthy poster to a Johnson reception last month and received a verbal reprimand.
