High Court Lets Convictions Stand In Several Cases
The Ohio Supreme Court today upheld convictions of William A Hoge and Arthur Drake for blackmail and extortion against Buster Matthews, and refused reviews of related assault cases connected with slot machine removal. It also refused to hear city land ordinance challenges, telecom appeals in Montgomery County, road improvements in Mt Healthy, and overtime pay for Cleveland firefighters. The rulings include insurance beneficiary disputes in Mahoning County and various lower court actions awaiting further action.

Court decision roots in faulty insurance reply and city fall
A court refused to hear an appeal in a case where Dorothy Toerner sued the City of Cincinnati over injuries from a fall on a defective highway. The ruling upheld the lower judgment, while Marvin Thompson of Hardin County pressed a separate suit against the New York Central Railroad to require fence restoration along its right of way, which the court found improperly framed in state action.

Yankey Loses Another Try To Escape Death
COLUMBUS AP Cecil Yankey failed again to escape the electric chair today as the Ohio Supreme Court refused to rehear his appeal from a first degree murder conviction. Yankey, 41, was slated for execution for the robbery murder of Leroy Woodland, 71, in Greenfield after pleading guilty in 1947 when a jury failed to reach a verdict. He had previously been granted habeas corpus relief on a one-judge ruling, was rearrested, retried in Highland County, and received a death sentence mandatory after a later conviction without mercy recommendation. He challenged the ruling to the high court, but the appeal was denied.
