Gov. William W Scranton of Pennsylvania announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination at the Maryland GOP convention. He urged a party choice over an exclusion minded minority and urged unity, saying the party must resist phony liberalism and blind reaction.
Undersecretary of State George W. Ball remained noncommittal after a White House conference with President Johnson. A visit to Washington may occur as a new effort to ease tensions over the Cyprus crisis.
Washington AP reports Southern foes of the civil rights bill have mainly given up on altering it further. Senate leaders indicate no major amendments will pass, though Southerners may press few technical changes and seek a record vote. A filibuster was halted as cloture limits take effect and debate proceeds with 16 amendments acted on.
In St Augustine Florida police and equal numbers of marchers kept order on the third night of downtown demonstrations. Dr Martin Luther King Jr remained jailed after a sit in as about 200 demonstrators faced a controlled crowd with fewer attacks than earlier nights. A trooper was splashed with a sulfuric smell liquid but escaped serious injury. Two white youths were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and rioting.
Ronald John Meyer aged 17 of Cincinnati died in a single vehicle crash on the West Side after losing control on a curve. The car left the road, struck a yard and hit a tree. Meyer was alone in the vehicle.
In Tuscaloosa Alabama Negro leaders suspend protest plans pending federal court action. An injunction against police interference was filed in Birmingham and no hearing date set. Rev T Y Rogers urged white community leaders to confer to negotiate segregation disputes.

Soviet premier, at a Kremlin meeting, says the pact aims at noninterference and cooperation among socialist states.
Eight defendants in the South African sabotage case were spared the death penalty and given life terms. The rulings followed earlier death sentences for three opponents of apartheid, triggering international protests and a UN Security Council appeal against executions. The convicted include Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Dennis Goldberg, Ahmed Kathrada, and four other Africans plus a white engineer.
