Space shuttle crew selections reward astronauts' stubborness
National Aeronautics and Space Administration names the first two two‑man shuttle crews with veterans of Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Skylab and several long‑suffering astronauts who finally gain a flight chance. The prime pair John W. Young and Robert L. Crippen lead the mission plan while backup crews include Joe H. Engle, Richard H. Truly, Fred W. Haise, Jack R. Lousma, Vince D Brand and Charles G. Fullerton, detailing each veteran’s prior roles and paths to a shuttle flight.
