Torrential rains flood the Black Hills area causing a disaster in Rapid City. Civil Defense sets a 9 p.m. curfew as officials warn the toll may rise with walls of water sweeping through homes, cars, bridges, and triggering landslides, explosions, and fires.
Eyewitness reports describe a night of record rainfall and a rising Rapid Creek that swept across Rimrock Highway and Canyon Lake. The flood killed about 99 in Rapid City with 105 total reported. President Nixon declared a disaster area and state and local responders mobilized guardsmen and police to aid rescue and relief.
Tang Ke leading the Chinese delegation at the U N environmental conference urged the gathering to condemn U S atrocities in Indochina. He cited bombings shellings chemical weapons and environmental destruction as part of imperialist policy while U S delegates Moss and Temple Black listened without reply.
Five children aged 1 to 12 died in a Jersey City blaze that destroyed two tenement buildings and damaged a third. Six other people were injured as two children jumped from a window and were aided by an off-duty firefighter.
