Visas for Cuban athletes not a policy shift says U S officials
U S officials say granting 382 Cuban visas to compete in the 10th Central American and Caribbean games in Puerto Rico does not soften U S policy toward Fidel Castro. The visas reflect IOC nondiscrimination rules and avoid jeopardizing U S participation, with prior notice that Cuban athletes, coaches and trainers would be admitted. Announcement came from the U S Embassy in Mexico City last week.
