Inflation pressures ease with wholesale prices up only four tenths of 1 percent in May the lowest in 10 months. Unemployment falls to 6.9 percent the first sub seven percent rate since November 1974 with 400000 jobs added to 90.4 million.
All 110 aboard the William Carson were rescued from ice floes and lifeboats after heavy ice punctured the 8,300 ton ferry off the Labrador coast. 88 passengers and 22 crew were saved, 42 by helicopter to Mary's Harbor and St Anthony, others by the icebreaker Sir Humphrey Gilbert. The vessel left St Johns on its first seasonal run to Goose Bay carrying 1,000 tons of cargo including 4,432 cases of beer.

The United States announces a diplomatic exchange with Cuba after 16 years, agreeing to exchange interest sections as a first step toward restored relations. State officials say talks progress toward reopening formal channels and future ambassadorial exchanges.
The Vietnamese government supplied the United States with 20 additional names of missing Americans whose remains it said were found in Vietnam. Holbrooke said families are being informed by their military services and that a public name release will await confirmations from Hawaii's central identification laboratory.
