Memphis State leaves MVC after scheduling rule defeat

Memphis State University withdrew from the Missouri Valley Conference during the MVC spring meetings in Memphis after failing to pass a rule change. The school sought to reduce six conference football games to five for MVC eligibility, despite having most schedules set through 1980 and 1973 and 1974 seasons with several MVC contracts. MSU has been a basketball power, recent MVC co champions, and finished second to UCLA in the NCAA tournament.
