Loser Names Study Links Unusual Elmer Hubert to Grade Bias
AP reports psychologist Dr. Herbert Harari of San Diego State University finds elementary pupils with unusual names like Hubert or Elmer labeled as losers by experienced teachers. In experiments with fourth and fifth graders, Hubert and Elmer scored nearly one grade lower than common names, while teachers in training gave all four papers equal marks. Girls named Bertha lagged Adelle but outpaced Karen and Lisa, suggesting early bias fades by high school.
