Dean Says His Stand Applauded
Dean J Robert Nelson says he has received a score of laudatory messages after resigning from Vanderbilt Divinity School over a racial issue. Nelson, Assistant Dean James D Sellers and eight faculty members quit to protest the school’s refusal to reinstate Rev James M Lawson, a Black student expelled last March for lunch counter sit in demonstrations. Nelson cited telegrams from Harvard Divinity School former Dean Douglas Horton and Princeton Theological Seminary President James McCord praising the action, and he noted several job offers.
