Turkish government sources report a two hour border clash with the Soviet Union near Gomahan, with no casualties. One Turkish account says a border guard fired after Soviet soldiers crossed. another says a Soviet patrol attempted to arrest a Turkish guard, sparking fire.
The Republican National Convention in Chicago nominated Richard M. Nixon for president and Henry Cabot Lodge for vice president on a single ballot after a long party meeting. Nixon aims to face Democrat John F. Kennedy in November as a lean, self driven 47 year old Quaker from modest means, while Lodge is a wealthy, experienced United Nations ambassador.
A helicopter carrying 13 people crashed near a Chicago suburb cemetery, with 15 dead overall. Witnesses said the craft appeared to lose control and dive after veering from its course, its fuselage striking tombstones and the tail section separating. Victims were men from several states. officials noted the craft burned on impact and that the shuttle service linked two airports.
Senator John F. Kennedy, at his Hyannis Port summer home, congratulates Nixon on winning the Republican presidential nomination and warns of a Democratic fight if Lodge places second. In Coral Gables Florida Jamieson H Peretta 26 was found slumped by his bed with a half eaten meal. Medical examiners say he apparently took sleeping pills before eating leading to his death.
More than 3 000 youths demonstrated in front of Palembang military headquarters demanding the Communist party exit. The protest violated public display rules and three leaders of Islamic youth movements were detained for interrogation.

Paul Baylus age 11 slipped from an inner tube while floating in 18 foot deep water at Greenwaters Lake Trailer Park on Ohio 303 west of Streetsboro. He drowned Wednesday night in Ravenna Ohio authorities said.
Seven American students were held by police in Moscow for distributing copies of the magazine Amerika from a car in front of the Metropole Hotel and released after about four hours. One student escaped and alerted the U S Embassy which negotiated their release.
About 50 students parked in their car in front of a hotel and passed out copies. A crowd formed with Russians and a hotel policeman who took the students into custody and escorted them into the hotel. An embassy spokesman said the students sought a phone call to the embassy but were refused. McGovern slipped away. The embassy said both groups were tourists, with four described as on an automobile camping tour of the Soviet Union.
