United Nations Security Council rejected Soviet charges against the United States over the RB47 shoot down. The Soviet veto blocked an international investigation and an Italian proposal to have the Red Cross contact surviving crewmen held by the Soviets. Nine members opposed the Soviet veto with Poland and the USSR at odds in a 9-2 vote.

In Bulawayo Africans urged formation of a Negro home guard to confront rioters and protect Africans who refused the boycott. Mike Howe, an African legislator, said less than 1 percent of the 100,000 Africans in townships participated in the riots as commando bands looted and threatened dissenters. In London Conservatives and Labor denounced Rhodesian apartheid and hypocrisy in the House of Commons.
Nixon nears the Republican presidential nomination as the convention moves toward a platform vote. He plans to select a running mate after tonight’s session with aides hinting at one to four names, with a Thursday nomination likely. Nixon has campaigned vigorously since entering the race. The vice president met with 35 state delegations as Eisenhower departs.

Rome AP report states President Giovanni Gronchi swore in Prime Minister Amintore Fanfani and a new Italian cabinet that includes three former premiers. The move marks a consolidation of leadership as Fanfani leads the government with experienced ministers.
Nixon faced heavy pressure to select telegenic Henry Cabot Lodge Jr as vice president. He summoned about a score of party leaders to his hotel tonight to decide and consider Thruston Morton of Kentucky as a possible alternative for November.
