Historic Gallipolis Monument recalls 1878 fever surge
In Gallipolis the River Front Park hosts a stone monument topped by a long bolt, the broken rocker shaft of the steamboat John Porter. The legend ties the yellow fever outbreak of 1878 to the Porter's arrival from New Orleans on August 18, 1878. The shaft arm came from the Porter’s engine, presented by Charles A. Hill and donated by John C. Rue.
