Hondo mayor’s bid for unemployed prompts wave of mail

In Hondo Texas mayor Woodrow Glasscock sought 180 hard core unemployed to boost unemployment figures for a federal grant. About 600 700 letters arrived from all 50 states and Canada with some supporters and some skeptical. A letter from Germany offered to come if paid fare.

Skies will clear and temperatures fall to the upper 50s tonight with a sunny, mild Tuesday high in the mid 70s. Rain chances are minimal tonight and near zero Tuesday, with an extended outlook showing fair skies midweek and a small chance of thunder showers Friday, highs in the 70s to low 80s and lows in the 50s.

Travel Experts Optimistic On U S Tourism Rise

Experts from the U S Travel Data Center and AAA say domestic travel is rebounding after a slow start. They project a stronger summer with higher car purchases and more trips as gasoline supplies improve and the economy remains solid. The Travel Data Center cites 109 million pleasure travelers last year and National Park visits rising about 4.5 percent in 1976. Bus and air travel show notable gains through the year, with air miles up 6 percent and Amtrak up 3 percent in early 1977.
