In a tight late vote the Senate defeated the 1.785 billion dollar military foreign aid authorization and cut off funds for U S combat operations in Vietnam Laos and Cambodia. The action came as Fulbright Mansfield and others pressed for withdrawal plans with House action pending.

In Fort Myers Florida July 16 a Florida couple the Van Bebers and the Williamses set out on a group fishing trip in a single boat. The craft capsized and the group drifted for days before the Williamses disappeared and Van Beber was rescued. He later saw his wife Jean drift away as she could not be saved.
