Hamilton police investigate the death of a six week old girl after an apparent head drop late Tuesday. The Middletown Journal notes the incident on Page B4 and reports local weather with scattered thunderstorms and a high near ninety one.
Workers from Murray Brothers carnival company toil at Smith Park under gray skies assembling the tall black and orange ride for the weekend Ohio Challenge Balloon Festival. The event promises family fun despite the eerie metalwork and medieval vibe of the setup.
Planners and volunteers race to finish preparations for the Ohio Challenge as rides from last year return and new attractions including a climbing wall join the lineup. Gates open Friday at 4 pm signaling the start of Middletown’s mid summer carnival with expanded vendors and child friendly activities.
The Rev Gregory Tyus was unanimously chosen Wednesday night to fill the unexpired 2nd Ward seat after the death of Robert Sonny Hill. Tyus praised by council for community service and proposed focusing on economic growth and open communication. Linda Ellen Watson withdrew but attended and backed Rosa Lean Lindsey. Other contenders included Roberta Derrico Helen Edwards John Soppanish and Dave Williams. Tyus aims to help Middletown become an urban community and urge residents to engage across ideas and cultures.
James Wainscott, AK Steel Corp president, said after a year of dialogue with labor unions in Middletown and elsewhere they have not yet responded to a call for talks on competitiveness. He praised recent contracts in Mansfield, Coshocton, and Rockport, and noted outreach to the Zanesville Armco Independent Organization leader James Dickson while signaling other union leaders remain unresponsive. Ed Shelley declined to comment on relations with the company.
Fairfield resident Don Helbig marks his 1000th Kings Island visit with a special ceremony titled Don Helbig Day. He has long paid for park admission and often buys season tickets, earning a Guinness record for coaster rides. Helbig recalls early days riding the Racer and Beast, and says the milestone was a pure, fun pursuit.
