Statins Safe for Children with Inherited High Cholesterol
Dutch two year trial shows pravastatin lowers cholesterol by 24 percent in children ages 8 to 18 with familial hypercholesterolemia and reverses artery narrowing with no serious side effects. New antidepressants show no added suicide risk in youths
A British study of 2,791 first time users age 10 to 69 across four drugs finds suicidal thoughts or attempts were four times more likely in the first 10 days of treatment than after three months, and death by own action much more common early on. No clear evidence that newer drugs like Paxil or Prozac raise risk more than older options. Doctors urged careful early monitoring. FDA advised warnings on labels.
