An AP photographer witnessed Turkish air strikes on a mental hospital as invasion troops stormed ashore near Kyrenia. Warships and landing craft waited offshore while Turkish jets bombed bridges and artillery positions amid minimal resistance. Turkish paratroopers are greeted by civilian transports.
Hoffa insists the ruling is not a setback as Judge John Pratt refused to lift a clemency ban keeping him from returning to Teamsters office before 1980. He planned to run for Detroit Local 299 president in November and then challenge Frank Fitzsimmons for the union leadership in 1976. He said he would expedite an appeal hoping for reversal by late October to enter the Local 299 race.
Fires raged in Nicosia as Turkish F4 jets struck the airport and Greek Cypriot positions after an invasion. Explosions lit the city, paratroopers landed, and residents sought shelter while Greek and Turkish Cypriot forces exchanged fire along the divide. A bazooka shell hit the Lydia Palace Hotel killing two Greek Cypriot soldiers on a rooftop observation post.
Joe Flynn, longtime actor turned comedian known for Capt. Wallace Binghamton on McHale's Navy, died at 49 in an accidental drowning. His nude body was found at his Bel Air home pool Friday. He leaves widow Shirley and two sons.
Two Cincinnati men Roland Reaves and Ricardo Woods both 23 were indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury as a six member jury indicated the death penalty if convicted. The case stems from Patrolman David Cole being shot during an attempt to escape arrest after an aggravated robbery. Reaves surrendered in Cincinnati with his sister Connie present. Woods was arrested in Clarksburg West Virginia.
A sunny and warm weekend is forecast for the Middletown area. Today's high near 80, low tonight around 60, with a 10 percent chance of rain through Sunday.
A grizzly killed due to arthritis and buried in Union Cemetery two years ago will be exhumed and moved to a suitable site. Symmes Township Trustees Rod Williams and Ken Harrison led the inquiry into the rumor and confirmed the bear was the pet of Eloise Burchold of Loveland, a former circus trainer.
