Pentagon sources note a new truck shuttle route to the Chinese border delivers up to 20 percent of Hanoi’s wartime supplies. Trucks operate mainly at night via routes paralleling rail lines to Dong Dang, where freight trains unload and trucks haul cargo toward the South.
Owens-Illinois announces a new chemical mix for cooking hardwood chips in the neutral sulfite semi chemical process to produce corrugating medium. The method eliminates sulfur smells, increases cellulose yield, and may cut pollutants without extra additives. Tests in Big Island Virginia and Tomahawk Wisconsin show near elimination of odors. A patent is pending and licensing efforts may cover about two dozen plants in the US and Canada.
Government forces battle toward the Citadel in Quang Tri City with 163 North Vietnamese killed in house to house fighting on Tuesday. A paratrooper unit moved within 100 yards of the fortress southeast corner as another approached from the northeast. Reports say five government soldiers were killed and 20 wounded on Tuesday. The U.S. Command said three American jets bombed a South Vietnamese position by mistake, killing one government soldier and wounding 16, marking the third such incident in two days near Quang Tri. Total deaths this period include 11 South Vietnamese killed and 51 wounded. Field officers blame close quarters and heavy air presence for the confusion. The Cobra helicopter gunship was shot down but the crew was rescued. Viet Cong radio claimed 21 U.S. warplanes shot down in the area since July 1, while the U.S. Command noted two planes and six helicopters lost in the province, with four crewmen missing.
The White House disclosed Henry Kissinger, Nixon's security adviser, is in Paris for secret Vietnam peace talks with Le Duc Tho and Xuan Thuy. Press secretary Ronald Ziegler said Kissinger flew to Paris Tuesday and would return to Washington late Wednesday.
