Western powers including the United States Britain and France held a four hour session in blockaded Berlin to consider options against the Russian land blockade and possible forceful measures. An American spokesman said the blockade was not discussed and no final plan was issued.
President Truman summoned Army and diplomatic leaders to the White House as the Berlin blockade spurred new Western plans. The session included William H Draper Jr and Lovett with Marshall and Clay, Koenig, while Donovan urged prompt sanctions against the Soviet bloc and its satellites. Western allies weigh forceful measures and possible UN action or convoy tests to break the blockade. A Berlin rally of five thousand protested the blockade and condemned Communism.
President Truman will open the extra session with an administration bill to tackle rising living costs. Charles G. Ross said the measure will mirror the ten point anti inflation program and aims at price control and housing while outlining potential foreign policy elements. The message may be delivered Monday or Tuesday and will be an inclusive package for price control, housing, and civil rights.
Southern Democrats met in Birmingham to oppose Truman and back Gov. J Strom Thurmond of South Carolina for president and Gov. Fielding Wright of Mississippi for vice president. Plans vary by state with anti Truman electors or full tickets discussed. Thurmond, in Columbia, said the South has a chance to push back against national Democratic leaders.
Orland Lee Brown 27 drowned in the Scioto River after falling from a rowboat. His fi ance Betty Elson 17 was a passenger in the boat.
The UAW CIO executive board unanimously authorized a strike of 116,000 Ford production workers in 46 plants after negotiations stalled last Wednesday. President Henry Ford II indicated Ford is willing to meet with the union, and a follow up meeting was planned before any strike date.
William Nelson Cromwell 94, famed attorney who helped organize U S Steel and advised on the Panama Canal era deals, died at his home. A Sullivan and Cromwell partner, he led legal work for the Panama Railroad and Harriman proxy battles, and founded the American Braille Press in New York and Paris.
Gerald Burgoyne eight and Joseph Burgoyne five from St Bernard disappeared Saturday night and wandered for about 30 hours in the Cincinnati area. An employee of the Cincinnati Street Railway Co identified the barefoot brothers after they rode a trolley into car barns and police broadcast their description. The boys had left to visit a carnival and were found safe with their relieved parents Mr and Mrs Edward Burgoyne.
Marie Abbott and Cyril Gordon face joint trial in Common Pleas Court on first degree murder charges for the May 30 killing of Morris R. Abbott, a Reily Township farmer. Prosecutors Baden and Bosch report most preliminary work done as defense also finishes case review. Witness lists not yet issued. jury selection may take time. Everett Moe Savaney of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification may testify for the state.
Israeli authorities charged Syrian and Iraqi troops with wide scale offensives in northern Palestine defying the UN truce. Reports from Haifa cited heavy shelling south of the Sea of Galilee and artillery fire near Jenin and Lajjun. Jewish forces captured villages in western Galilee before the cease fire line. Arab forces fired on Tel Aviv Haifa highway and near Zikron Yaakov as Israel vowed to secure main roads. The UN mediation deadline set by Count Bernadotte had passed with cease-fire orders in effect only late yesterday.
United Nations officials are expected to form an international police force in Jerusalem within days. Count Folke Bernadotte, arriving at Rhodes, plans to press for 250 armed guards immediately, with a goal of 1,000 to 1,500 later. He discussed the plan with U S French and Belgian delegates prior to heading to the Middle East.
Twenty bodies including two American children were recovered from the sea off Macao after a Cathay Pacific flying boat crashed Friday. At least seven Americans were among the 25 listed missing. Identified dead include Marguerita Nelson, 16, and Daniel Nelson, Jr., whose parents were aboard. The aircraft exploded and sank. among the dead were the pilot Dale Cramer of Summerfield Kansas and H M Hodgson linked to the Texas Company of Hong Kong.
Gov. Thomas J. Herbert issues a formal call for a special session to reduce the sales tax and implement a $5 federal increase for old age pensioners and the blind. The session begins Thursday afternoon with no plan to expand its scope.
A mystery flying fortress carrying 18 Americans landed at Santa Maria Azores. Portuguese officials detained the craft under international rules for undocumented aircraft after it flew from Halifax toward Boston with mechanical faults and missing equipment. It had been impounded in Halifax, then released but could not return to Westchester due to mechanical problems.
Cleveland AP report says James Kratky built a two story house on an adjacent lot by mistake. He had a permit for a different property and plans to move the house after a new foundation is ready. Mrs. Roland Englander allowed the structure to remain in her yard temporarily while Kratky fixes the site.
Police continued the investigation after a dynamite blast shook a six block west side area in Columbus. A single stick exploded beneath a window ledge of the Young Distributing Company building, causing minor damage and no injuries.
A U S marshal's badge failed to deter a pickpocket who stole $108.25 from Marshall John Dempsey of Pittsburgh at Youngstown bus terminal on Sunday and also took the badge.
Carroll Reece former Republican national chairman will run in Tennessee Republican primary August 5 for the United States Senate. Chairman Guy L. Smith announced the plan and said Roy Acuff the hillbilly singer-actor now in Hollywood will run for governor.
Walter E. Hope, former assistant secretary of the treasury under Hoover, is named counsel to the Republican National Committee campaign manager. Hope also resigns as chairman of the NRFC while Herbert Brownell Jr. announces the move.
John Joseph Pershing lay in state at the Capitol after a long career from the southwest campaigns to the First World War. President Truman and government officials attended the ceremony while thousands filed by the catafalque in Arlington. The general, age 87, was given a nation’s tribute as he ended a storied military trail.
Mrs. Jack L. Adams said she and her husband would turn down their $7,300 prize from Mutual Broadcasting Systems after winning on the three for the money show. Heavy attention since the win has left them exhausted and seeking rest.

In Delaware Ohio a 24 year old widow Janie Marie Roszman shot herself after her husband Sgt Jarvis Roszman 25 killed in France on January 16 1945 body arrived from overseas. Police say she left behind their three year old son Michael and lived above her mother. The husband is buried at a Columbus depot funeral home hosts her body beside his.

Columbus AP report notes detectives seek 22 year old Ohio reformatory parolee John Coulter West for questioning in the July 9 slaying of Earl C. Ambrose tavern owner. Investigators also seek Robert M. Daniels. Michigan officers connect the case to a Flat Rock tourist cabin operator killing July 10.
