Phone Strike In Portsmouth May Spread
More than 50 operators at the Portsmouth exchange of the Ohio Consolidated Telephone Co threatened to spread to five other exchanges after a CIO Communications Workers agreement ended a prior walkout in Columbus. Meetings to ratify the deal were set for Cambridge Wilmington Cadiz Circleville and St Marys. Virginia Pierce said the strike came as a surprise as operators criticized the compromise for a 13 cent hourly wage rise for plant workers and eight cents for other staff, while the union had sought 25 cents. Current pay scales were not disclosed.
