Purge Rollout Deepens in Soviet Ukraine and East Germany

Moscow announced a third wave of Communist reshuffles touching security and justice chiefs across the USSR and East Germany. Timofiy Strokach was named interior minister of Ukraine while East Germany ousted justice minister Max Fechner, installing Red Benjamin. Beria’s purge appears to spark the wider crackdown across regimes. Fechner’s replacement is a longtime Communist jurist who has a reputation for harshly punishing crimes against the regime. Fechner and his family were seized in the action. The moves come as authorities expand efforts to control internal security and law enforcement.
