Light Sprinkling Of No Value In July Garden Care
Hot dry winds deplete soil moisture quickly and slow plant growth in July. Deep soil moisture fuels roots, while light daily sprinkling only wets the crust and shallow roots. Irrigate thoroughly to six inches once a week or skip if rainfall suffices. Overwatering harms roots and soggy soils. Water deeply or not at all.

Japanese beetle active now in Butler County
A native of Japan the Japanese beetle was first found in 1916. In Ohio the beetle is most abundant in the Eastern half and can be severe in some years. Adults damage over 250 plant species by skeletonizing leaves and devouring rose buds. In Butler County it feeds on corn, trees, tomatoes, beans and roses. Adults live 4 to 6 weeks, with grubs spending most of the year underground.

Beetle Control Tips Include Sevin And Malathion Use
Journal notes that the Japanese beetle faces enemies like weather disease and insects but requires chemical control when damage is severe. Sevin and Malathion aid beetle control when paired with a regular spray program and applied every five days or as damage appears, with better results from alternating the two insecticides.
