Soviet Soyuz Lifts Off in Historic Space Linkup Mission
Soviet cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov launched from Baikonur for the first in a two craft mission toward a linkup with NASA aboard Apollo crew Thomas Stafford Vance Brand and Donald Slayton as they prepare to reach orbit and close the gap above West Germany. The launch marks the first live Soviet broadcast of a launch to the world while Apollo sails toward a rendezvous in space.
