Bromine spill in Rockwood prompts mass evacuation and injuries

A tanker leak of liquid bromine near Rockwood caused the evacuation of about 1 500 residents and left 40 treated at area hospitals. Civil defense and Dow Chemical teams planned to move the tanker and vent the remaining chemical while officials surveyed air quality and prepared for residents to return. The crash killed the driver Sue Simms Thompson and left her husband Robert in ICU with respiratory injuries.
