National Cancer Institute expands campaign to screen those exposed to head and neck X rays up to 40 years ago for thyroid tumors. Over one million people may be affected, with estimated 8,200 new cases and 1,150 deaths this year.
In Rockwood Tennessee, the town remains endangered as brown fumes drift from a tanker wreck that spilled toxic bromine onto a highway. National Guardsmen completed evacuating the town’s 5,259 residents.
A tanker leak of liquid bromine near Rockwood caused the evacuation of about 1 500 residents and left 40 treated at area hospitals. Civil defense and Dow Chemical teams planned to move the tanker and vent the remaining chemical while officials surveyed air quality and prepared for residents to return. The crash killed the driver Sue Simms Thompson and left her husband Robert in ICU with respiratory injuries.
Relatives accuse the State Department of inaction in the disappearance of 35 year old former Peace Corps volunteer Jane Bissell who vanished in Banos Ecuador last October. They urge greater government action and accountability in the case as concerns grow over U.S. envoy responsiveness.
The new Cleveland Amtrak terminal opened and was dedicated but lacks direct road access. City and state blame each other over funding and design changes, while officials note access via a parking lot or freeway ramp is required. The $552 000 station features geodesic light metal frame architecture and has been in use since June 29.
