Kennedy Religion Looms Over Democratic Convention
The religious issue surrounding Senator John F Kennedy’s Catholic faith casts a shadow as delegates prepare to vote. Telegrams opposing him arrive at state delegations and three Baptist ministers back a 500,000 signature petition against any Catholic for president or vice president. Supporters note Protestant votes for Catholics in past races, while leaders like Johnson and Roosevelt weigh implications for November. Kennedy leads in Pennsylvania and Illinois with California split, as key figures resist or embrace endorsement.
