Saigon. U S forces and allies killed fewer enemy troops last week than any week in a year and a half amid ongoing air raids around Saigon. U S fliers claimed a second MIG shot down over North Vietnam, with further air combat losses and destruction reported.
U S forces report 198 American deaths last week with 1 248 wounded as enemy buildup around Saigon and DMZ intensifies. Allied patrols and B 52 strikes continue while MIG 21s contend with U S fighters in ongoing engagements.
The Pentagon scrapped the F111B fighter project after spending 216.5 million dollars over six years. The Navy failed to produce a carrier plane from the TFX design as Senate and House panels declined further funding. Vice Admiral Thomas Connally called the effort a nightmare, noting weight and combat-spec shortfalls.
