GOP Leaders See Chance To Salvage 9 Cent Wage
House Republicans say a floor fight next week could salvage President Eisenhower’s 90 cent hourly minimum wage plan. The Education and Labor Committee split 15 15 on the measure and 21 9 approved a Democratic bill raising the minimum to 1 from 75 cents. Senate already approved $1. White House worries about stepping beyond 90 cents in one go. Southern Democrats are seen backing the 90 cent figure. Reaching a compromise could delay full implementation to next year and later years.

Confession Plan Backfired: Man Freed After 10 Years In Jail
Belton Texas. Eugene Padgett who confessed to a murder he now says he did not commit has won his freedom after serving a burglary sentence and pursuing appeals. The 24 year mystery remains. Who beat Will Sanderford to death with a tire tool during a February 1931 burglary at Little River Texas. Padgett said his confession was part of a plan to gain transfer to a small town jail and escape. He later argued the murder indictment should be dismissed and his appeal recounts legal points about waiving a jury trial in capital cases. Sanderford’s survivors believe Padgett innocent. The night of the crime featured a thunderstorm and a window prying at Sanderford’s store after a spate of burglaries.
