Ex-coal miner finds salt mining safer and cleaner in Cleveland
Burt Rockwell a veteran coal miner now foreman at International Salt in Whiskey Island explains salt mining 1,765 feet beneath Lake Erie is safer and cleaner than coal work. The mine uses room-like sections to yield about 675 tons per extraction with 2 million tons mined yearly for ice control and a 250 product range. Prices range 10 to 20 dollars per ton.

June grocers rise 2.5 percent in Ohio market basket
The Associated Press survey shows Ohioans paid more for groceries in June with the average rising from $20.44 to about $20.00. Lettuce jumped 31 percent to 76 cents a head and tomatoes 23.4 percent to 79 cents a pound. Prices varied across cities with牛 lettuce 9 to 49 cents and tomatoes 66 to 99 cents. Bacon fell about 1.5 percent to $1.91 per pound while milk dipped 0.10 to $1.39. Hamburger and chuck roast rose with regional highs of $1.55 and $1.43 respectively, and a 10-pound sack of potatoes climbed 10.1 percent to $2.07. Additional items show coffee at $3.01, eggs at 67 cents a dozen, margarine around 63 cents, and sugar near $1.10 per five pounds.
