Tornadoes kill seven in Minnesota and North Dakota towns

The Associated Press reports tornadoes struck Gary Minnesota and Elgin North Dakota, killing seven people and injuring about 50. In Gary a twister hit around 3 am, damaging homes and a nursing home as residents sought safety. In Elgin the tornado tore through the town’s north quarter, destroying houses, trailers and a six unit apartment building. one victim died in senior housing, two others in vehicles, and a fourth while en route to care. Authorities withheld victim names pending relatives’ notification. about a dozen more injured, with 35 to 40 treated for minor injuries.

Fighting worsens as Syria shells Lebanon amid clashes

Syrian troops and Christian militiamen battle for a fifth day in Beirut Herat. A one hour barrage preceded dawn and sniping along the three mile divide between Muslim and Christian districts followed. Casualties rise with at least 35 KIA and 62 WIA in one day and 167 killed, 579 wounded since the cease-fire collapsed.

Pentagon counters Soviet mining threat shift in navy support

The Pentagon acts to counter a Soviet move to plant mines in deep water shipping lanes, reversing a decade long policy. The Navy has reduced its active mine sweeping force to three old ships and 21 helicopters, now limited to shallow-water operations with Pentagon approval.

Navy Readies New Mine Countermeasures Ships at $100 Million Each

The Navy plans a new class of Mine Countermeasures ships costing about 100 million dollars each. Designed to hunt and remove deep water mines, the vessels would be 253 feet long, displace about 2 000 tons, and use twin diesel propulsion. Time capsule dismal failure at Baltimore museum ceremony

A 225 marble stone guarding an 1828 lime capsule was lifted by railroad officials in Baltimore, yielding only a 1953 newspaper and a railroad timetable instead of 150-year memorabilia. Curator Franklyn Carr noted the items appear buried at the museum dedication in 1953.
