Syrians shell Beirut area amid Christian Phalangist clash

Syrian troops shelled the Ein Rummaneh district as Phalangist Party gunmen returned fire with mortars and rockets. Residents hid in basements while authorities said non Lebanese elements tossed a grenade near a downtown shopping center. Bachir Gemayel was detained briefly by Syrian troops before being released as the bombardment continued.

VFW head says Carter is anti vet in Ohio speech

John Wasylik national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars told the 58th Ohio VFW convention that President Carter is the most anti veteran, criticizing defense posture as eroding, while Art Schlichter received a 500 scholarship for outstanding high school athlete. Edward H. Marzee was elected state commander and Thomas Dudzik senior vice commander.

Nixon Arrives in Kentucky Amid Warm Welcome

Former president Richard Nixon touched down at London Corbin Airport to a sweltering 95 degree reception as about 1,000 waited for a charter jet. He waved from his limousine, met Republican officials, planned a private Saturday meeting, and faced signs praising a 1980 comeback while crowds eyed his visit to Hyden for the Ricard M. Nixon Recreation Center dedication.

Nixon visits Hyden Kentucky dedicates $2.2 million recreation center

Maryland death penalty law takes effect amid Pa vetoes

Maryland becomes the 32nd state to enact a death penalty law on a day Gov. Milton Shapp vetoes a Pennsylvania measure. Maryland allows capital punishment for murders during robbery or kidnapping, mass murder, contract murder, and killings of police or prison staff. Veto contrasts with other Northeastern governors who blocked similar legislation.

Sniper fire at Red Barn Restaurant in St Louis kills woman

About 200 people were caught in a crossfire in a restaurant parking lot early Saturday. Sandra Porter, 21, of Pagedale, Mo., died from a head wound. Five others were wounded and taken to hospitals in satisfactory condition. Police had no arrests by afternoon and were pursuing a theory of random gunfire from nearby locations.
