United States Senators pressed for final passage of the administration tax overhaul bill amid a marathon session and a promise of a three day holiday. Amendments were expected to be disposed of quickly with some Democrats opposing the measure while administration leaders anticipated final approval. Senator Long proposed a $20 tax cut credit but fell 50 to 33 as Republican support narrowed with Democratic opposition.
South Korea's National Assembly rebuked President Syneman Rhee by withholding confidence from his new cabinet. Liberal party members joined independents and Democratic Nationalists, voting 52 in favor, 74 against with 10 abstentions and 9 invalid votes. The tally fell four votes short of the 102 needed for majority.

Sorsogan city suffered massive destruction with eighty percent of old buildings ruined and the Catholic cathedral toppled. Communications were cut as landslides blocked routes to Albay and the Red Cross dispatched teams.
The Japanese Coast Guard ordered a cutter into Russian waters to rescue 14 shipwrecked Japanese fishermen stranded on a rocky point in the Kurile Islands.

He said he would seek an amendment to the foreign aid bill and would press Secretary Dulles at a closed Senate session to reaffirm U S policy opposing UN recognition of the Chinese Communist regime.
