About 17 000 CIO telephone equipment installers walked out against Western Electric starting early today triggering fears of crippled long distance service. Pickets in some areas halted operator crossings but dial phones and automatic lines may keep operating briefly. The union said the strike was on.
Ohio Bell officials report no expected nationwide strike impact as Western Electric installation workers, members of the Communications Workers of America, fail to report to work. Middletown commercial manager RR Miller says a picket line could deter some employees, but service is not expected to be cut.
