Court Rules Parental and Spousal Consent Unconstitutional

The Supreme Court held that states cannot require a husband’s consent or a parent’s permission for a woman or a girl under 18 to obtain an abortion. The decision voided those provisions of a 1974 Missouri law while upholding a requirement for written consent by the woman. The ruling follows the Court’s landmark 1973 decision on abortion regulations in early pregnancy.
